1984 was to become the year of the breakthrough. After a Semi-Final loss to Ivan Lendl in Rotterdam, he reached the
Final of an ATP tournament (for the first time in his career) in Milan. He won the event by beating his fellow countryman Mats Wilander (then number 3 on the ATP Ranking) 6-4, 6-2. Within two weeks Stefan
made a big jump on the Rankings from 83 to 17. The first quarter of 1984 had been better than expected.
After a disappointing clay court and grass season, the Olympics in Los Angeles were to come. By
then tennis was still a demonstration sports. Nevertheless our Stefan managed to win the illustrious gold medal by defeating Maciel 6-1, 7-6.
After he lost to John McEnroe in Round 2 of the US Open
he prepared himself for the final Grand Slam tournament of the year: The Australian Open (until 1985 played at the end of each year). He played very well and only Mats Wilander could stop him in the
Quarter-Finals: 5-7, 3-6, 6-1,4-6.
But the year wasn't over yet. The best was yet to come: Davis Cup Finals against the (unbeatable) strong US team. With top players like John McEnroe, Jimmy Connors
and Peter Fleming teaming with McEnroe for the doubles match, the US was thought to easily prolong their title. But that idea was not to the liking of our Swedish team captained by Hans Ohlsson. Besides
Edberg who played a superb doubles match together with Anders Järryd (who else), the Swedish team consisted of Mats Wilander, Henrik Sundström and Joakim Nyström. Mats and Henrik both won their singles
matches. This meant that the decision could already fall by winning the doubles match. Edberg played a very solid doubles match, he didn't even lose his serve once! Davis Cup Triumph was a fact!
On the ATP World Ranking List he ended the year at position 20. |
