His farewell year was now a fact. Unfortunately he didn't start well. He couldn't prolong his Doha title: he lost to Becker. Not only would Edberg say goodbye from singles matches, he would also stop playing doubles. This he did manage to end in style by winning the doubles title at the Australian Open together with Petr Korda. In the singles he lost in Round 2. No great highlights anymore in the first half of the year. He left Roland Garros in Round 4, after having received a standing ovation.

He once more shined at the grass tournament of Queen's where he made it to the Finals. He lost unfortunately to Becker. He had hoped to make a final performance at Wimbledon, but also there it would be Round 2 defeat. He said a sad goodbye to his beloved grass on Centre Court. Semi-Finals at Bastad and Los Angeles were a few better results. At the US Open he reached the Quarter-Finals after having defeated fresh Wimbledon champ Richard Krajicek in Round 1: an outstanding result. He tried to make a good ending at home by competing in the Stockholm tournament: countryman Kulti was not in the mood to give Edberg a proper farewell: he beat Stefan 7-6, 6-3.

That was the end of a great career. So at age 30, Stefan Edberg went quietly into the night. With his absence a great gap has arisen. His sportsmanship will be missed most as Edberg is distinguished as one of the game's true sportsman, a man for all eras of tennis.

On the ATP World Ranking List he ended the year at position 15.
